Porcelain shoulder head with black sculpted hair with wide wing curls at sides of head drawn into loosely braided coil at nape of neck, painted bright blue eyes, red and black eyeliner, single stroke brows, closed mouth, blushed cheeks, carton torso and skirt-shaped base with protruding brass "feet", leather arms, porcelain hands, wearing antique white gown. Condition: generally excellent, functions well. Marks: Patented July 15, 1862.... Comments: Autoperipatetikous, one of the first patented American toys, 1862, the mechanism is hidden under the skirt, and when wound, causes the doll to glide forward on brass feet. Value Points: rare early American toy, with original porcelain head, beautifully detailed and rare coiffure, acquired by Carole Jean Zvonar from the Samuel Pryor Collection.
