Description
12" (30 cm.) Reclining on a teakwood plinth is a carved ivory lady with elaborate and intricate carving of hair, body posture, facial features, shoes and other ornamentation, having tiny beaded eyes, clasping a large sunflower, and having sculpted beaded necklace and bracelet inset with tiny colored beads, as well as a "loose" matching bracelet. Condition: generally excellent. Comments Chinese, late 19th century, the figures are known as "doctor's dolls" indicating their possible use by modest women to point out ailing parts of body; the elaborate ornamentation of this model suggests rather its creation as a decorative object. Value Points: very fine carving including unusual flower and jewelry designs.
