19" (48 cm.) Solid domed bisque socket head portraying a laughing child with highly characterized features, painted blonde short boyish hair, intaglio blue eyes with large black pupils and white eyedots, black and red upper eyeliner, fringed brows over shaded undercoat, accented nostrils and eye corners, rounded nose, closed mouth modeled as though open in laughing expression, shaded and outlined lips, modeled tongue, impressed dimples and laughter lines, composition and wooden ball-jointed body with side-hip jointing, antique woolen coat, trousers, shirt, saddle shoes, undergarments. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 174. Comments: mystery maker, possibly Hertel and Schwab, as indicated by the style of doll, the style of the incised number, and by this missing number in their model sequence, circa 1912. Value Points: extremely rare, previously undocumented character with wonderful expression appearing almost as hand-pressed in its sculpting detail, finest quality of bisque and painting, original toddler body with original finish.
