23" (58 cm.) Standing upon a teal green velvet covered platform is a bisque-headed child with blue glass eyes, mohair lashes, painted lower lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, wheat blonde human hair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs with separating panel at chest level, wire upper arms, right bisque forearm. The doll is costumed in a white fur coat with matching muff and winter cap, and has leather leggings and shoes. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well, one finger reglued. Marks: SH 1039 10 1/2 dep (incised). Comments: Roullet & Decamps, circa 1900, when the presentation begins the little girl stands shyly with both hands hidden inside the muff. When wound and lever released, she quickly blinks her eyes several times, then looks to each side and nods; she lifts the muff, and her right hand escapes holding in it a little red feathered bird. She shows the bird from side to side, blinks again, and pauses. Periodically she "breathes", as though shivering, with heaving chest. Music plays throughout. Value Points: a rare and wonderfully intricate automaton with simple yet appealing theme is well preserved and functions well.
