Standing upon a velvet covered platform that contains a music box and clockwork mechanism is a bisque head doll having brown glass eyes, painted lower lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, accented lips, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, composition forearms. She is wearing a navy blue mariner costume with peach silk trim with matching cap, and holds a coral sea shell in her right hand and a flute in her left hand. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1300-6 Dep S&H (doll) (fragments of original paper tune on base). Comments: Roullet & Decamps, circa 1900. When wound and lever released, the little girl brings the flute to her lips as though playing to call the mermaids, nods and turns her head, plays again, and then brings the sea shell to her ear to listen to the ocean; music plays. Value Points: rare automaton with delightful activity and beautiful state of preservation.
