24" (61 cm.) giraffe. 15' doll. 21" length. Posed upon a wooden platform with rose silk cover, gilded paper edging, and tiny spoked wheels is a bisque-headed doll with blue glass eyes, open mouth, painted features, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, painted boots, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, elaborately costumed as Moroccan in silks, brocade, gold coins, and elaborate turban with beads and tassels. The doll is leading a paper mache giraffe with proudly raised head, painted flocked finish, inset glass eyes, carved mouth, with woven carpet held by leather strap. When pulled along, the doll turns its head from side to side, waves arm as though urging on the giraffe. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, late 19th century, a series of mechanical platform pull-toys with hidden simple mechanism under the platform were created by a firm whose name remains a mystery; the toys were presented as Etrennes in Parisian department store catalogs at that time in a variety of themes, and special commission larger examples, such as this, were created for luxury toy boutiques. Value Points: wonderful and rare pull-toy with superbly detailed antique costume and accessories, proud and well-sculpted giraffe.
