37" (94 cm.) Solid domed bisque socket head, painted blonde baby hair with sculpted forelock curl, very plump face with sculpted double chin, dimples and over-sized ears, brown glass eyes, painted lashes, feathered and brush-stroked brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth modeled as though open with defined tongue, accented lips, composition bent limb baby body, antique organdy gown. Condition: generally excellent, some slight body repair. Marks: 571 K&H (in banner). Comments: Kley and Hahn, 1912, the exceptionally large doll was made in this size only, presented in the firm's 1912 advertising (the same year that the firm introduced their line of standard size babies, see advertising on opposite page) and was likely created as a promotional exhibition doll for that year's Leipzeug Toy Fair. Kley and Hahn named the doll "Riesenbaby" (Giant Baby) in their promotions to distinguish it from the standard line. The overall length is 37", the head circumference is 37", head length is 11", the hips measure 27" above the legs or 34" including the legs. The unlikely size and the hand-sculpting details of the amazing body add credence to the likelihood that no other dolls of this model were ever made. The doll is from the ex-collection of Ralph Griffin before its acquisition by Carole Jean Zvonar. Value Points: the exceptional size of the unique doll partners with exemplary sculpted bisque and painting and its wonderful original body. Just 5 years short of its 100th birthday, the doll may be one of the rarest in the world.
