11" (28 cm.) Bisque head with flanged neck depicting the uniquely designed Kewpie, bald pate excepting classic blonde topknot, forelock curl and above-the-ears curls, painted black side-glancing eyes, short curly lashes, dash brows, little pug nose, closed mouth with thin-line impish smile, cheek dimples, original pink muslin stitch-jointed body, bisque hands with starfish-shaped modeled fingers, sculpted blue wings. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Made in Germany 7377 (head) 5 (arms) (frail remains of original cloth Kewpie tag on dress). Comments: Kewpie, designed by Rose O'Neill, circa 1912. Value Points: rare cloth-bodied model is all original, including original pink muslin and lace dress, has superb bisque and painting. From the original Carole Jean Stoessel Zvonar family. Carole Jean relates "My grandmother bought each of her daughters one, purchased from the A. Parker Toy Store right here in Salisbury. One of my aunts gave me hers so I would have one in the collection. Each one had a different color dress, all pastels".
