Description

23" (58 cm.) Bisque socket head, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, dark painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, very slightly parted lips although appearing as though closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms with tubing for smoke passage, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent, smoking mechanism functions well. Marks: (Jumeau artist check marks on head) 2035/yo (paper label on base). Comments: Leopold Lambert, the smoking automaton was a favorite of that firm, offered in a variety of styles and sizes, with or without music, circa 1890. When wound, the Marquis appears to smoke, inhale and exhale from his especially sculpted mouth, through a complicated hidden mechanism; he alternately lifts lorgnette to his eyes as though to gaze at an interesting scene. Value Points: rare automaton with especially handsome appearance, very choice modeling of face, original magenta silk satin costume with gilt metallic embroidered vest, ormolu miniature lorgnette.
