Description
17" (43 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead depicting an elderly balding man with animated expression, all-over bald except tuft of hair in front of each ear, enamel eyes, thick curvy brows, deeply-sunk gaunt cheeks, mouth modeled as though open with tongue and teeth (one original toothless space). Excellent condition. Neapolitan, late 1700s, exceptional characterization, the model is attributed to the school of Francesco Celebrano, director of modelers for the Naples Royal Factory, whose particular focus was creation of presepio figures.
