Solid domed paper mache head with paper mache shoulder plate, plump facial modeling, flat-cut neck socket, black glass enamel inset eyes, tinted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, defined philtrum and chin dimple, muslin midriff and upper arms and legs, paper mache lower torso and lower limbs, jointed wrists and ankles. Condition: original finish, extensive chipping at lower edges of limbs. Comments: Germany, circa 1860, the early form of bebe or child doll based upon the Japanese Ichimatsu doll exhibited at the London 1855 World Exposition. Value Points: extremely rare large size of the early doll, likely intended for exhibition purposes, the doll wears antique baby gown, soutache-embroidered pique cape, and bourrelet ("walking" cap).
