8" (20 cm.) The sculpted brown-complexioned doll has painted features and highly characterized expression, black fleecy hair, cloth stuffed torso with attached arms that are clasping a wooden banjo, and hollow cloth legs with paper mache feet. A black glove is attached to the back, and designed for play by using human fingers as doll's legs to make the doll dance or walk. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Smilaloo (detailed label and illustration on lid label) Hamley Bros. Ltd. Comments: circa 1910, designed to be amusing, the lid has immense historical value as a study in historical stereotypes. Value Points: well-preserved toy with original paper lid documentation.
