10" (25 cm.) Porcelain shoulder head with black sculpted hair in very elaborate fashion, a crown of braids at the top and thickly looped waves at the sides captured in to loose curls at the nape, painted facial features, elongated throat, carton torso and skirt that conceals the walking mechanism, kid arms, brass feet. When wound, the doll "walks" by alternately lifting feet. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: patented July 15, 1862, also in Europe 20 Dec 1862 (bottom of skirt). Comments: Autoperipatetikous, circa 1862, an early American patented mechanical doll. Value Points: beautiful facial model on the patented mechanical doll, rare coiffure, antique costume.
