16" (41 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head with deeply-sculpted features, ebony black complexion, enamel eyes, age lines incised on forehead, parted lips with tongue and teeth, closely-cropped tightly-curled black hair and matching beard and moustache, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and muscular legs, painted blue stockings and brown shoes, wearing original costume comprising rough homespun shirt, striped cotton harem pants, and carrying three wooden barrels. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, late 1700s, attributed to the studios of Giovan Polidoro, especially fine sculpting of features including furrowed brows.
