Description
23" (58 cm.) easel. An artist easel with faux-wood-grained cover is surmounted by a gilt lettered "Prix de Rome", and supports a child's paint box with lovely engraving on the lid to suggest an actual painting; hinging open to reveal various artist supplies viz. brushes, miniature palette, miniature easel, paints on silver dishes, and more, still tied to the box and in unplayed with condition. The famous Prix de Rome, established in 1663, was a famous prize awarded to a promising French art student each year, and was a natural theme for creation of a child's toy painting set. The set was presented in Parisian Etrennes catalogs, circa 1890.
