Description

45" (114 cm.) Carved wooden swivel head with sculpted facial features and hair, the back of head carved separately and attached, deeply carved hair waved into casual ringlet curls behind the ears, sculpted eye sockets, painted blue eyes, aquiline nose, closed mouth with gentle expression, all wooden androgynous-sculpted body with simple-carving and dowel jointing, over-sized hands in expressive pose, painted blue stockings on lower legs, painted two-strap shoes. Condition: generally excellent, some typical paint wear and minor wood flakes, original painted finish. Comments: maker unknown, the facial and hair sculpting, coupled with the androgynous body style, are suggestive of the female French author, George Sands, whose writings and socially scandalous behavior, were the talk of Paris during the mid-1800s. Value Points: fine detail of sculpting on the mystery doll, wearing early gentleman's woolen costume with soutache embroidery, lace cuffs and collar.
