17" (43 cm.) Solid domed paper mache swivel head with gofun complexion, enamel inset eyes, painted facial features, closed mouth with center accent line, painted dark grey hair with defined brushstrokes, classic Ichimatsu body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (artist signature on torso, see inset photograph). Comments: Japan, Ichimatsu play doll, late 19th century, with store name of Matsuzakaya imprinted under the costume; the important Japanese store, founded in 1611 is one of the oldest department stores in the world, and is famous for its linens, woven fabrics and kimonos. Value Points: fine original condition of the classic doll, wearing multi-layered original costume including fitted satin slippers, rare signature mark.
