Description

34" (86 cm.) The all-wooden doll features hand-carved head with deeply sculpted curly hair, refined facial features with defined eye sockets, aquiline nose, carved ears, and delicate complexion wash with shaded blue eyes, lips, blonde hair. The head is attached to the torso by a central dowel with seven wooden "rings", and the upper and lower torso are separated by a similar dowel with ten wooden "rings"; there is ball and dowel jointing at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and additional pivot jointing at the upper and lower arms. Condition: generally excellent. original facial finish with very minor nose rub. Comments: maker unknown, the facial sculpt is suggestive of early 1800's Romantic Era; artist's wooden mannequins were created by various firms at this time, and their influence on the mid-19th century French fashion doll wooden bodies is evident here. Value Points: very rare early wooden doll with superb sculpting of face, hands and toes, intriguing mystery body with infinite posing possibilities.
