Description

20" (51 cm.) Standing upon a green velvet covered platform with ball fringe is a bisque-headed child with character expression, very narrow squinting blue glass eyes, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils of rounded nose, closed mouth modeled as though open in crying expression, outlined lips, modeled row of upper teeth and tongue, pierced ears, auburn mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: 211 Depose Tete Jumeau 4 (doll) L.B. (key), (original tune label with pencil inscribed tune name "Bicyclette perdue". Comments: Leopold Lambert who commissioned an exclusive series of character faces from Jumeau to enhance the activity of his automata; this face is the rare model 211. When wound, the doll turns her head from side to side, then alternately lifts the broken-head paper mache Polichinelle she holds in her right hand, and the handkerchief in her left hand as though to wipe away tears. Comments: all-original automata with rare character face wearing rose silk dress with lace, ribbon and sequin trim, matching cap, original Polichinelle costume, original tune label on base.
