Description
8.5" (22 cm.) A wooden-cased sewing necessaire is decorated with tortoise-shell in an elaborate fan-shell inlay, having lion's head handles, talon feet enclosing gilded balls, and opening to an exceptional interior of intricately arranged silk with many separate compartments having tortoise or bone lids or decorations, and containing many silver and bone sewing implements. A silver label on the lid of the box is inscribed "C. Sumner 1815" in elaborately scrolled letters. Excellent condition. Circa 1815.
