13" (33 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with bald pate, delicately painted curls above each ear, black glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, closed mouth with gentle smiling expression, paper mache body elements separated by cambric cloth covered midriff and upper limbs, bellows enclosed in midriff which when squeezed causes the baby to cry "mama". Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1855, inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu baby doll that had just been introduced to Western society. Value Points:  fine original condition, working crier, along with antique costume, unusual painting detail includes white finger and toe nails.
