Description

13" (33 cm.) Each pressed bisque head has brown sculpted hair casually swept across the forehead and behind the ears, with details of hair waves overall, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted brown lashes, feathered brows, accented  nostrils, closed mouth modeled as though open, and is mounted on original plinth with characteristic Sevres porcelain cobalt blue color. One depicts the crying 233 model of SFBJ and is remarkable for deeply sculpted crying crinkles around the eyes and mouth and shaded detail of lips and tongue; the other has gentle smiling expression enhanced by sculpted indentations around the eyes and dimpled lip corners and philtrum. Condition: generally excellent. Comments:  SFBJ, with some possible connection to Sevres Porcelain which was involved in the Renaissance of the French Doll movement during the 1912 era when the busts were likely made. The busts represented character models from the French 19th century children's storybook figures "Jean qui Rit"  and "Jean qui Pleure" which had been popularized in various statuary pieces for decades. The large size and hand-pressed detail indicate the pieces were made as Exhibition pieces and the glass eyes indicate that were intended as actual models of the 1912  SFBJ character doll models 233 and 235.  Value Points: the extraordinary hand-pressed pair are believed to be one-of-kind. They are featured in the book The Beautiful Jumeau by Florence Theriault.
