Description

20" (51 cm.) Carved wooden head and upper torso with high-waisted slightly shaped bosom, tacked-on stretched kid-over-wooden upper torso, scalloped edge of front torso decorated with red cotton twill bands, kid arms with wooden "griffes" hands, accentuated rounded hips, elongated legs. The doll has enamel-painted brown eyes in cut-out sockets to appear as though glass eyes, heavily defined eye lids, painted features. Condition: generally excellent, original finish with typical fading of features. Comments:  French, circa 1825, the doll wears her exceptional original costume of black silk blouse and tablier over several petticoats with provencal prints, wool knit stockings, black leather shoes, three-layered coiffe, and 18 kt gold double-faced Jeannette cross with raised beading design. The doll was featured in French Dolls in Folklore Costumes by Florence Theriault, and is shown in Encyclopedia of French Dolls, Volume II.
