Description

17" (43 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with accented lips, pierced ears, hollow-leather body with dowel jointing according to patent drawings, antique dergarments. Condition: generally excellent, right foot dented. Marks: Poupee Brevete SGDG. (body) 4 (head). Comments: Pierre Victor Clement, who patented the hollow leather body in 1867, based upon principles of leatherwork learned in his shoemaker profession, and designed to replace the gutta-percha body of Huret that Clement noted were too fragile and "eventually fall to pieces".  Value Points: very rare doll, few examples of the beautifully articulated body were ever made.
