Carved wooden head with defined combmarked hair, richly detailed carving of ears, nose and mouth, enamel inset eyes, wooden body with iron-hinge articulations and padded linen torso cover, muslin arms with iron armature, carved wooden hands and feet, very muscular lower legs. Condition: generally excellent, unrestored original painting. Comments: French from the region of Arles, early 19th century. Value Points: very rare portrait wooden doll with unique body construction, and having original very detailed country costume comprising unusual knit leggings with attached pants and shoes, muslin pantalets, petticoat with embroidered hand cut-work, cotton print blouse, apron and shawl, and heavy hand-quilted transfer pattern skirt. An original (frail) bonnet and wig is included. The costume is fitted appropriately to the doll by means of the original linen and muslin padding attached to the body.
