Description
9" x 5" box. About 22"d. extended. A heavy-board box with engraving on the lid portrays various gentlemen and soldiers relaxing with their dogs and drinks at the entrance to a grotto or cave. A cut-out window in the lid reveals an interior scene, and when the lid is removed seven different windows appear, in attached accordion design, that offers an ever-deepening perspective on the cave interior. The grotto was evidently a popular tourist attraction as ladies, gentlemen and children are strolling through the various scenes exclaiming at the wonders of nature. Very good condition of the rare early parlor amusement with three-language cover. Circa 1840.
