Description
21" (53 cm.) Bisque socket head, brown glass sleep eyes, mohair lashes, painted lower lashes, open mouth, outlined lips, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Dep 8. Comments: for the French market, circa 1896, the doll was likely created for an exhibition in honor of the Russian Tsar Nicholas II's visit to Paris in that year. Value Points: extraordinary detail of multi-layered historic Cossack costume includes beading, braid work, embroidery and appliques of fine silks and velvets, with special workmanship on handwoven stockings, and black leather cobbled shoes.
