Description
18" seated. An early wax doll with black enamel eyes, painted features, wig, original muslin body with black kid arms to suggest gloves, is wearing her original elaborate muslin and velvet gown with metallic and lace trim and generously adorned with faux-diamond rosettes that match her tiara. The doll is posed seated upon her original fabric covered chair. Condition: original and unrestored, with extensive craquelure of the wax complexion, costume well preserved. Comments: England, circa 1850, the Queen of the Fair led the May Day festival in small villages, carried around the market where she gave coins or cakes to young children. Few of these dolls still exist.
