19" (48 cm.) h. x 11"w. theatre. Included are thirteen hand-carved wooden hand puppets with original vibrantly painted features depicting various characters from 1800s children's theatre stories, and including jesters, policeman with beard, stern burgermeister, postman, scowling bonneted lady, smiling bonneted lady, bearded man with turban, devil, and others, and including carved dog. Each head is attached to original cloth costume with attached wooden arms and legs; the costume designed for insertion of human hand to provide theatre action. Included with the puppets is a wooden theater with fabric curtain drapes and decorative paper covers. Excellent condition. Germany, late 1800s, a remarkable large collection of imaginatively carved and painted characters in fine state of preservation.
