Description

5" (13 cm.) One piece heavy paper mache figure of bonneted woman clasping her taufling baby, the woman's lower body actually ball-shaped to allow it to tilt or rock back and forth while never tipping over. The woman has modeled ruffled Charlotte bonnet over sculpted hair, painted facial features, modeled shawl and the baby has a very expressive painted face. Condition: good, unrestored albeit original paint is faded yet age-darkened. Comments: Germany, circa 1850, a wonderful early toy with silk skirt hiding the rolly-base, and its original wooden tray. The toy was featured on p. 32 of Faurholt's Book of Dolls and Dollhouses.
