Shaped leather face and upper torso over firm torso, back of head leather seam under the wig, well-defined aquiline nose, cut-out eye sockets with painted eyes layered beneath, painted lashes, brows, and lips of closed mouth, elongated throat, modeled bosom, softly-stuffed brown leather lower torso and limbs, gusset-jointing at hips and elbows, separately stitched thumbs. The doll wears her original early cotton gown with narrow bodice pleating, skirt pinned for use as a baby tote, undergarments, turban over human hand- stitched wig, leather slippers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1850,only a few of these fine early dolls have been located and their maker remains a mystery; the doll represents a native of Martinique that had been a French colony since 1636. The doll, from the Estrid Faurholt collection, was featured in her Book of Dolls and Dollhouses before being acquired by the Legoland Museum.
