Description
21" (53 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted delicate lashes and arched brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accent center line, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, commercial muslin stitch-jointed lady body with original artistic paper mache hands. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 5 (head and shoulderplate) Pat'd Oct 5 (printed paper label on front torso). Comments: French, circa 1875, with original body by the American doll body maker of Jacob Lacmann, although curiously the patent date for his doll is registered as March 25, 1874; the French head is original to the American body as this was a method sometimes used by importers into the burgeoning American market to save custom fees on importing heavy French kid bodies. Value Points: the intriguing history of the doll is complemented by her expressive features, very fine bisque, and beautiful early costume with soutache embroidery, undergarments, leather shoes, and original early wig with attached snood and green bows.
