20" (51 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head swivel head on dowel-jointed paper mache shoulderhead, black glass enamel inset eyes, lightly painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with accented lips, muslin upper torso, paper mache lower torso, hands and feet, wooden lower arms and legs, jointed ankles and wrists to suggest delicate baby limbs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1855, the doll was inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu doll introduced at the London World Fair in 1850,and created by both French and German doll makers. Value Points: beautiful facial model of the rare early doll in well-preserved condition, multi- layered antique baby gown and bonnet.
