Comments: Pierre-Francois Jumeau, from a portrait series of African women he created for exhibition purposes, circa 1878. Five different models were created with varying expressions although all evinced a sense of nobility; their majestic size, their detail of sculpting and their special glazed porcelain finish suggest their production for special commission only. Few of each model exists, and it is likely that few were ever produced. Value Points: extraordinary beauty and strong character are captured to perfection with sculpting details including the furrowed brows, philtrum, strong jaw and cheek bones, throat hollow and shoulder blades; very sturdy and fine original body, wig, and costume.
