Description

17" (45 cm). Bisque swivel head on bisque shoulder plate with alternate faces on either side of head, one face with blue glass enamel eyes, painted lashes and eyeliner, rose blushed eye shadow, feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, and accented lips; the other face with sculpted closed eye lids, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with hint of smile. The ears are double-sided with pierced ear hole at center base of lobes, and the brunette mohair wig covers the top and sides of face. The all-wooden body has ball-swivel waist, dowel- articulation at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, separately sculpted fingers, defined lines in palm and defined nails, an antique costume is included. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1868, this being the year that the "surprise double-faced poupee" and the dowel-jointed swivel-waisted poupee were registered by him. Value Points: extremely rare model that combines the early registered head and body patents; the head with superb quality of bisque and painting, the body with outstanding detail of sculpting and fine original finish.
