18" x 12" (46 x 31 cm). A richly lacquered basket contains an elaborate arrangement of paper mache and glass fruits including an apple in the center symbolizing reproduction, peach symbolizing immortality, 20 variously toned cherries, 7 black grapes, 10 green grapes, along with other fruits and leaves. The anniversary globe was presented by the family to the married couple at important anniversaries. The fruits chosen for the arrangement presented the story of the couple's married life, presumably the cherries represented the number of years of marriage, the black grapes the number of sons, and the green grapes the numbers of daughters. Arranged upon an ebony- finished wooden base under glass dome. French, circa 1890.
