Description

22" x 14" (56 x 36 cm). A splendid arrangement in rich 24-karat gold plating surrounding a maroon velvet cushion includes a wealth of symbols: dove with wreath of harmony, 14 line tree leaves with an impressed bee in the center of each,4 sprays of roses, 2 daisies, and other richly embellished designs. There is a large beveled center mirror framed by a 1" wide filigree frame, three rectangular mirrors, and two curved mirrors. An unusual brass bell hangs from the dove's beak. When a couple chose to marry during days that were forbidden by the church, such as a full moon, they could seek dispensation from the local priest and this dispensation was evidenced by the brass bell that hung prominently in the wedding globe, symbolic of the ringing of church bells at the wedding. Seven personal medals or badges are also displayed, each with a design indicating support of French orphans of World War I or the Serbian soldiers wounded in France; these badges were designed by famous French illustrators of the 1914 era such as Poulbot. The bride's coronet rests upon the center cushion, an elaborate mélange of different sized wax orange blossoms, and matching earrings are included. A superbly preserved and poignant presentation whose historical interest points enhance its beauty. Arranged upon a black painted wooden base with blown glass dome. French, circa 1915.
