Description
15" (38 cm) overall. A heavy paper cone decorated with gilded borders, engraving of bride, and lace and ribbons, is topped by a German black haired china doll head with fanciful jester's cap trimmed with brass bells. Hidden inside the paper cone are four miniature all-porcelain baby dolls, each tucked inside a white cotton pique bunting trimmed with lace and little brass bell. The babies are all attached by a silk ribbon, and symbolized the young couple's hopes for many babies. The cornet was traditionally given to guests at French weddings, filled with candies and sweets. This "surprise" cornet in fine original condition is a rare and delightful variation of the custom. France, circa 1885.
