15" x 14" (38 x 36 cm).A rich moss green velvet presentation form in the shape of an open-fronted pedestal basket is centered by a soft rose velvet tufted cushion. The green velvet is decorated with delicate pastel-tinted and gilded metal decorations in the shape of hanging baskets and garlands, and there is an oval mirror at the back. The basket stem is decorated with a generous garland of hand-pressed and formed bisque roses and wildflowers, and posed in the center is one perfect large white pearl. On the rose cushion is a wedding coronet of intricately arranged small seed pearls highlighted by glass stars with faux- diamond sparkles. Whereas waxed orange blossoms were the traditional decoration for coronets of first-time brides, it was the pearl that decorated the coronet of widows upon their re-marriage. The pearl was considered the symbol of feminine creativity. A very beautiful and historically interesting presentation is perfectly preserved, on its oval ebony-finished wooden base under blown glass dome. French, circa 1900.
