Description

20" x 17" (51 x 43 cm). A gilded metal frame in the shape of a lady's toilette table features a shield-shaped beveled mirror with hand-painted floral decorations above a red-velvet tufted cushion that rests inside a gilded filigree frame and is supported by fancy scrolled legs with a beveled glass lower shelf. Bountiful decorations and symbols decorate this frame, mostly handmade or personal symbols of events that framed the young couple's future life. These include two handmade bouquets of native woodland flowers and shrubs, three unusual walnut-cased pincushions of purple silk, and a hand-carved wooden bird with painted white tail feathers. There are four WWI medals, including a silver figural of Lady Liberty and two dated 1914/1915. And there is a sprinkling of purple silk pansies on the cushion top, the symbol of heartbreak. The entire presentation, poignant and mysterious, is preserved on its original ebony wooden base with blown glass dome. French, circa 1915.
