22" x 14" (56 x 36 cm). A very intricate and elaborate arrangement of 22-karat gold-plated symbols and mirrors surrounding a red velvet tufted cushion that displays an unusual coronet of tiny wax orange blossoms arranged in three spiral circles with tiara style crest and occasional pearl highlights, along with a faux- ivory miniature book inscribed St. Malo (the seaside village of France),lined in red silk, with original silver pencil. The symbols include ten trapezoidal mirrors (five arranged in a star formation) symbolizing perfect harmony, eight- sided central mirror, and two rectangular mirrors representing the years of the engagement. Other symbols include a pair of doves with wreaths of harmony,16 ivy leaves symbolizing attachment,14 daisies (daisies),and various scrolls and shell designs. The entire arrangement is on an oval ebony-finished base under a blown glass dome, and is impeccably preserved. The richness of its decorations suggests its creation for the young bride and groom from a prosperous family of St. Malo in Brittany. French, circa 1900.
