11" x 11" (28 x 28 cm) box. 9" (23 cm) doll. An exceptionally preserved presentation box has embossed and gilded paper designs and silk ribbons on the lid centering a raised panel with the gold scrolled word "Mariage". Upon opening the box, there is a small bisque doll (marked A 1,by Jules Steiner) with blue glass eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, original composition body, wearing a cream silk wedding gown complete with lovely embroidered undergarments, slippers, and veil. She owns a miniature wax orange blossom coronet and bouquet. On the inside box lid and the panel lid beside her are arranged more costumes for the young bride including dress, blouse, petticoat and pantalets, hankies, collar, stays, sacque, and night cap. Beneath the panel lid are three more compartments: one containing a porcelain wash set, perfume bottle, soap, comb and brush; another with lift-off lid containing fan, watch, mirror and other accessories; and a third with the bride's pearls and hair ornaments. The detail and quality of the superb presentation suggests its creation for a prestige boutique. Its perfectly preserved state suggests it may have been a wedding gift for a young bride. Circa 1890.
