Standing upon a green velvet covered wooden platform is a bisque-headed girl with sculpted character features, depicting a sobbing child, narrowed glass eyes, closed mouth modeled as crying, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, bisque hands. The girl dangles the head of her Polichinelle doll from her right hand, its body falling below. In her left hand she holds a handkerchief. She wears a peach silk dress with silver sequin beads, matching shoes. The key is marked LB. The doll is marked Depose Tete Jumeau.
Movements: The doll turns her head to the left, and tearfully lifts her broken doll as though to show it to Mama, then lowers it. Then she turns her head to the right and lifts her handkerchief as though to wipe away tears. She dabs her tears four times, moving her head in concordance each time. Music plays.
Historical Reference: The crying child model, especially sculpted by Jumeau to enhance the activity of Lambert's automata, was part of an entire series of highly characterized faces commissioned by Lambert from Jumeau. The facial model used was always compatible to the activity - sad, cheerful, mischievous - and served to augment the "story" that the automaton depicted. Circa 1895.
