22" A handsome wooden cabinet is embellished with inlay, banding and transfer decorations depicting an artist's palette and sand timer on the lid, and a musical motif with horns and panpipes on front. The lever-wound movement features a 40-note musical comb plus five engraved saucer bells with enameled floral tops and colorful "butterfly" bell-strikers. There is a tune indicator and a manual retraction control so that the music can be played with or without the bell accompaniment.
The cylinder musical box plays 12 tunes including Black and Tan Polka, The Village Blacksmith, and Daisy Bell (otherwise known as Bicycle Built for Two). Six tooth-tips need replacing, but good operating condition and sound.
Historical References: The musical box is attributed to Arthur Junod of Ste-Croix, Switzerland. He (as well as others) used the black and gold tune program sheet that is affixed to the cabinet, having lyres and stars design, and, too, the serial #43428 fits within his production number sequence for that period of time. Circa 1892.
