Description

21"w. x 10" h. A mahogany case with beading and carved trim sits atop its original storage table that features a sliding, side-shelf for holding one's favorite tune discs while they wait to be played. The inside lid is decorated with an engraving of a tiara'd Queen and cherub-musicians, symbolizing the name Regina which is the Latin word for Queen. The agent's name, H. Gautschi & Sons, 1030 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, also appears.

Included with the musical box are 75 tune discs, 15 1/2" diameter, their music ranging from classical to marches to patriotic numbers. There are songs by Gounod, marches by Sousa, and Romantic numbers.

Historical References: The Regina Music Box Company was the largest and most successful of the several American firms that together caused New Jersey to become the virtual home of music box making in America. This example has been in one family's hands since sold to them by Henry A. Gautschi in Philadelphia more than a century ago. Circa 1899.
