Seated upon a velvet covered chair is a paper mache head monkey, clasping a harp between his hands, anticipating play. The monkey has brown glass eyes, leather eyelids, h inged jaw, movable upper lip, teeth, artistically painted face, mohair wig, carton torso and legs posed in seated position, cast lead painted hands. He wears his original elaborate silk costume with emblematic brass buttons, Marquis hat with tassels, single glass lorgnette and red stockings and shoes. The harp is superbly made, decorated in Chinese red with a figuraldesign of lion's head at the crest, and elaborate gilded ormolu trim. An original attached Vichy key and pull lever are at the sides. Under his seat is an original paper tune program marked with initial C.P. and selections II Bacio Valse and La Ferme a Papa, Colonel Polka.
Movements: The Marquis Monkey turns his head side to side in an imperious manner, nods, blinks his eyes at the sublime sound he is making, chatters (both upper and lower lips m ove) and strums both hands over the keys in a realistic manner, and independently of each other. Music plays.
