Description

Of Black Forest origin, the chip-carved wooden figure depicts a man standing casually, with carved detail of costume including bowler hat. He has one-piece body, socket head, with keywind at back and pull-string activator. Movements: He turns his head casually from side to side and whistles a tune.

Historical References: A series of carved wooden whistling men, many in humorous context, were created by the German manufacturer of singing pop-up birds. The series was a logical and profitable adjunct to their music box business, as it drew upon the well-established wood-carving industry of the same region. Circa 1900.
