Description

Seated upon a carved wooden school bench is a little boy with scowling expression. He has a paper mache head, glass eyes, closed mouth modeled as though open with tongue, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs in seated position, hinged right hip, bisque hands. He is wearing striped velvet pants, burgundy velvet vest, silk shirt, paper mache dunce hat with hinged ears lettered "Ane" (donkey), striped stockings, leather shoes, and owns a book, handkerchief and wicker lunch basket. There is an original Vichy key and pull lever.

Movements: He turns his head quickly side-to-side, then upward, he lifts his right arm as though to wipe away tears, then lifts his book. Periodically his ears flap up and down, and he taps the school bench with his left foot. Music plays.

Historical References: The amusing automaton featuring the wayward school boy was inspired by the popular French story of Jean Qui Rit, a misbehaving teasing boy. It appeared in the Vichy catalog as model #467 and was described as "Modele Depose". Circa 1900.
