Description
The box-shaped barrel organ with beautiful inlay work and cast iron turning handle, originated in the desire to teach canaries to sing, hence the name serinette, from the French word, serin, for canary. When the crank is turned and wooden levers at the side activated the musical box issues a high pitched simple sound and tune meant to attract birds and capture their attention. The serinettes were most most often produced in the Mirecourt (Vosges) region of France from the 1700's until the mid-19th century. Circa 1850.
