17" French Automata "Little Girl Knitting" by Roullet & Decamps

Description

Seated upon a gilded wooden chair with fancy carving is a bisque-head doll who is busy knitting. She has bisque-socket head, blue glass paperweigt eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and upper legs, hinge-jointed knees, composition lower legs and arms. She is wearing an aqua blue silk dress with fanct tucks and self-covered buttons, lace trim, matching shoes and hair bow. In her hands she holds two wooden knitting needles and a scarf. The doll is marked Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 5.

Movements: She nods her head forward and back as though examining the work she holds, while her hands move back and forth in a realistic knitting activity. It is possible that her foot originally tapped the floor, too. Music plays.

Historical References: The doll appeared in the Roullet et Decamps catalog named Bebe Tricoteur, number 256. In the catalog the automaton is shown displayed on a velvet covered platform.
